“Nobody’s Fault But Mine”

“A successful man could hide his past,

but an unsuccessful man spent the rest of his life

trying not to drown in his.”

The Way of Sorrows

I am an unsuccessful man. My mind wanders.

Suddenly I’m adrift in deep, open water.

I try to keep my head above waves that prompt

consternation over my past.

Every regret, misstep, wrongful word, wrongful act, humiliation

are borne on these waves from out of nowhere to haunt me.

I don’t accept my faults and wounds as “an adjustment,”

or a “process” toward well being,

or a product of my environment, or “God made me so.”

I confess, all is my fault, and I seek forgiveness.

To that goal, I try to escape my self-made Valley of Tears

on my Way of Sorrows  to my  Calvary and forgiveness.

And, each journey ends in Crucifixion.
