The Swallows of Shady Bend; Reconciliation of the Dead; Peony Haiku 1 by Barbara A Meier

The Swallows of Shady Bend

The swallows of Shady Bend

carry the ghosts on the wisps

of their tails, dragging them

to the bridge from the muddy

banks of the Saline River.

The rotting railroad ties held together

by intertwining roots of green wheat and grasses

dead ends at the spalling limestone abutment.

A mossy shroud on a hobo bridge.

Reconciliation of the Dead

As sweet as the breath of

morning, coming

through the bedroom screen,

he leaves my side

and evaporates in a dream.
