About Smatterings of Cerulean
Smatterings of Cerulean is a collection of short poems by Susan Richardson, accompanied by the photographs of Ken Whytock. It is a collection, essentially, about love. In these poems, Richardson explores the trajectory of the human experience, and how in all its shapes, textures and colours, love is at the root of the myriads of internal landscapes people travel. There is darkness and loss in these pages, yes, but there is also strength, fierce feeling, and ultimately, hope. These poems are the fullness of life crafted into small spaces, a blending of intense emotion and compelling images that tell a story of what it means to love. Smatterings of Cerulean also features a foreword by Lawrence Moore, author of The Breadcrumb Trail.
Advance Praise for Smatterings of Cerulean:
"Susan Richardson’s new collection, "Smatterings of Cerulean" is transformative on every level. Each stanza gifts the reader with a beautiful, photograph-crisp image, and a deep feeling that wells in the stomach. Each poem then opens like a hibiscus in the morning sun, blooming beyond the limits of the page and the limits of language. The collection itself is expertly crafted, with every poem adding to the depth and power of its neighbours. A wonderful collection that manages to be simultaneously heartbreaking and heart-mending."
– Peter Lily, author of “An Array of Vapour” and “A Handful of Prayers”
“Richly complex, perfectly crafted, and beautifully illustrated, this short poetry collection tells stories of frailty that will shake you to your bones. The intense physicality of Richardson’s newest poems is like a dramatic explosion of a giant star. In the waiting room of her own life, a woman is unraveling, ‘mak(ing) the highs higher and the lows more frequent.’ Each poem serves as the beacon’s flame, though, a source of inspiration for finding light amidst the darkness. To articulate sorrow with so much clarity and precision is to turn pain into art.”
Bojana Stojčić – author of Knives All Blade (DarkWinter Press)
“Susan Richardson in her own beautiful, unique way, brings waves of colour to every aspect of human life within these pages. Her past and present, rich and raw, challenging powerful emotions. Questions that can take a lifetime to consider, are answered within these poems.
In Smatterings Of Cerulean, Susan allows us into her world piece by piece. Poems that help us form connections with what goes on inside us and with others. We need to take this journey with her, confront our own emotions. Susan’s deft use of intense focus throughout this stunning collection assures we’ll reread again and again.”
